"So? Any progress?"

Worth shook his head without looking up at the commander. He made a jot with his stylus on the data pad, crossing numbers with figures that Abner couldn't make heads or tails of. "Nothin' yet."

Abner didn't make a face, didn't slap the pad off of the useless doctor's table. He merely turned toward the cell that held Toni and allowed himself a tiny smile, trying to keep the desire that was stirring his body from showing in his eyes. "Are you really trying, Ms Ipres? This is for science, you know."

The girl glared back at him, her own eyes burning with something he was fairly certain was not lust, but she'd learned not to answer a long time ago.

Worth sucked on the toothpick that substituted for the cigarette he wouldn't be allowed to have until he was off-duty. "Look, she ain't gonna be ready any time soon. Why dontcha have a go with one o' the V's? They're sterile enough, God knows -"

Abner stiffened, spinning to level a flat stare at Worth. "Because I'm not here to 'have a go,' as you put it. I'm here to ensure the survival of the human race. To do that, we need every viable member of society to participate. We've been over this, you know this."

"Yeah, right, you an' all the young, pretty ones -"

"V's are dead!" Abner snapped. "Necrotic flesh cannot produce young! But W's..." He calmed, and would've shrugged if he'd allowed himself such mundane gestures. "W's are different. Their flesh is very much alive. And as such, can be used for the benefit of all, if the contagion of lycanthropy can be removed."

"... right," Worth said, turning back to the table. He picked up the data pad and began furiously punching something into it.

Abner glanced once more at Toni. She hadn't moved. "I can see you're busy. I'll check in tomorrow. Make sure you have something to show me by then, Doctor. I don't like wasted time." He inclined his head toward the cell. "Good day, Ms Ipres."
